Art + beer = good times!

Check out the Shadow Art Fair tomorrow, December 1st, the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti.

The event takes place from from noon to midnight, and promises: one day, 40+ artists, and 9,000 gallons of beer! It’s a great place to pick up some handmade works — and some unique holiday gifts.

The original Shadow Art Fair took place in July 2006 when The Michigan Design Militia, a group of five, pulled together over 30 friends and colleagues, presenting them with the idea to have a group art exhibit/design fair. The original fair acted as a “test run” to see whether there was community interest in and whether the Michigan Design Militia was capable of pulling off such an event.

Giant snow globes exhibit

The exhibit is open throughout the holiday season during mall hours in District 6, adjacent to the movies.

“Dr Death” to speak at Wayne State

This Thursday, November 29, physician Jack Kevorkian will give a free lecture on prison reform from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Wayne State’s Helen L. DeRoy Auditorium.

Nicknamed “Dr. Death,”Jack Kevorkian was born in Pontiac. He graduated with a medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1952, served in the Korean War, and then began to specialize in pathology. He became known for his opinion that medical experimentation on condemned prisoners be legalized, and in the late 1980s became an outspoken supporter of euthanasia.

Known to participate in the facilitation of deaths since 1990, he was twice charged with murder and several times with assisting suicide, but found not guilty. In 1998 he became internationally known when a video showing the death of one of his clients was shown on national television, a strategy he had chosen to bring the public debate on euthanasia to a head. Kevorkian was convicted of second degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance and imprisoned in 1999. He was released from prison on June 1, 2007, after promising not to assist in any more suicides. He has said that he will look to change the laws regarding euthanasia.

Ski Michigan

Thanksgiving weekend marks the annual opening of most Michigan ski slopes. As long as temperatures get cold enough at night, many ski resorts will once again be open for business over the holiday weekend. Mt. Brighton reported that it plans to open on Thanksgiving day, 11/22, as will Nub’s Nob, Shanty Creek, Boyne Highlands, and Crystal Mountain. Mt. Holly is scheduled to open on 11/24. Most resorts are offering lift tickets on their websites - check them out for more info and discounts.

Help the hungry

Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, the region’s largest emergency food provider, has reached a critical food shortage. The agency’s inventory is down by 1.5 million pounds of food.While the need for emergency food continues to grow, national food donations have decreased. The trend of national food companies’ improved efficiency levels leading to less and less surplus product for the emergency food network is not surprising overall, but the amount of decline was. The 35% decline in donations so far this year - one million pounds of food - is the largest falloff to date; at a time when Michigan’s economy is at its worst, the amount has had a major impact on the emergency food system.

If you’re flying over the holiday, here’s a tip: check for real-time flight delays before you leave the house by clicking on http://www.fly.faa.gov. The site shows which airports have delays and can save you some hassles in an already-hassled travel time.

Be sure to register at www.faa.gov as well to receive notifications e-mail or cell phone notifications — a handy way to get updated when you’re already at the airport.

Time to talk turkey!

I’m looking forward to a hearty Thanksgiving meal, with turkey and gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and corn, then sitting down for a good game of football.

For a gourmet touch, we’ll stir in some fresh chives or parsley to the mashed potatoes, or maybe some grated cheese and sour cream for a creamy, cheesy taste.

And for dessert? Pumpkin pie, of course. In my opinion, the best recipe is the simplest - the one on the Libby’s label.

Carr retires

After 13 years, Lloyd Carr is stepping down as U-M Wolverines coach. He will make an official announcement at 10 a.m. today at a news conference.

We’ve had some great championship moments with him and he has certainly led the team with integrity and pride, but at this time I think the team is ready for a fresh leader and a new direction. College football has changed a lot since he stood at Bo’s shoulder and learned from him, but Carr has failed to adapt to the changes. It’s time for someone new. It’s time to start winning the national championship. It’s time to stop losing to Ohio State.
