So long, Santa Bear

The plush white bear that made his debut in 1985 is going into permanent hibernation after this year’s holiday season, Macy’s reports.

A special farewell collector’s edition set of a Santa Bear family (including Mrs. Bear, Belle and Berry) will be available by phone starting Oct. 15. The family of four will be dressed in flannel pajamas that feature images of all the Santa Bears since the collection began.

The Santa Bear has been a must-have for me since his debut at Hudson’s. Marshall Field’s had continued the Santa Bear tradition when it bought out Hudson’s stores in 2001. Sadly, the tradition will now end. What’s next, the phase-out of Frango mints? Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
